TV Series description: Spartacus is an American historical drama television franchise created by Steven S. It is televised by television network Starz, premiering on January 22, 2010, and concluding on A pril 12, 2013. The series was inspired by the historical legend of Spartacus, a Thracian gladiator, who from 73-71 B.C., led a slave rebellionagainst the Roman Republic. DeKnight serves as the lead writer and executive producer of the series. The show has been rated TV-MA for graphic violence, profanity, and strong sexual content. Filming is based solely in New Zealand. The show is comprised of 3 seasons and a prequel.

The first season is titled Spartacus: Blood and Sand. After filming of the season was complete, the production team announced a second season to be produced.

However, it was delayed due to lead actor Andy Whitfield being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Because of the delay, Starz produced a six-episode prequel titled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, to introduce a backstory and to give Whitfield time to recover. Pre-production of season 2 continued when Whitfield was announced cancer-free, however his cancer recurred, and Starz officially re-casted the role to Liam McIntyrefor the role of Spartacus for season 2, titled Spartacus: Vengeance. Spartacus: Gods of the Arena is a Starz television mini-series and prequel to Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which premiered January 21, 2011. The series follows the character Gannicus (Dustin Clare), the second gladiator to become Champion of Capua.

Cast members and characters being reprised from the original series include John Hannah as Batiatus, Lucy Lawless as Lucretia, Peter Mensah as Oenomaus, and Manu Bennett as Crixus. Andy Whitfield will make a brief appearance as Spartacus. IGN gave the series positive reviews, especially the finale, giving it a 9.5/10 and calling it 'Incredible'.
