When i run either PTEDIT or PTEDIT32 from Windows Desktop, i get either Error #5 or Error #5005 What am i doing wrong? Yep, trying to reverse the process and make it back to NTFS but i need help with PTEDIT. I have a BOOT CD which i downloaded from the net but when i get into dos, it doesnt seem to work dos command properly. It wont let me access C:, doesnt List (DIR) files on the cd disc correctly as when i insert a cd which i have burnt PTEDIT onto, it doesnt show the file. Ive also tried various drive lettter without sucess. Both drives appear to be the original sizes.

Can you show me how i can get PTEDIT or PTEDIT32 to work on my pc with these extra files you mentioned, or if you have any other suggestions. Ill have to try it tomorrow now, as i have to go, but i will look into making a USB boot disk when hopefully i can also copy PTEDIT32 onto, to see if i can get it to run if all else fails. Thats just a basic boot CD I made with Windows 98 boot files, since you only hopefully need to use it once I didn't take much time with it. Burn that ISO to a CD as a disk image, then boot your system with it. Choose the option to boot with CD-Rom drivers because I was too lazy to make it all in the boot file.

When DOS loads you will get a warning about not being able to identify the file system. Thats normal because they are NTFS. One of the last lines will show what drive letter the CD-Rom drive was assigned make a note of that letter.

I'll use the letter D, chnage that letter if necessary. Type the following pressing Enter after each line: D: mouse ptedit You should get a screen like this: The boxes on the very left is the file type, the second one down where I circled should be your second partition. Make sure you get the right one, hopefully you will see it listed as PqRP Click once in that box to select it and then click the button 'Set Type'. Change it to type 07 and click OK.

Close ptedit, remove the CD and restart your system buy holding down the CTRL and ALT bottons while pressing Delete. Best of luck, Dave. I added mouse.com, although it works for all my mice I know it doesn't work for some.

Try skipping the mouse and after typing D: type ptedit and see if that loads. If it does, can you see if the second partition is set to something other than 07? (look in that screenshot I posted). If the 'Type' box is set to something else, I can tell you how to change it using your keyboard. Brian also has another tool he uses that may be easier then ketboard commands.

When your done looking at it with ptedit, you can reboot your system by using CTRL+Alt+Delete. I'll be asleep but Brian will be around. This may be easier and kill 2 birds with one stone.

Here is a free partition resizing program called partition wizzard. It's very similar to PM, in fact it looks like a copy of it to me. In the download section there is a free bootable CD, download that and burn it to a CD. Boot the system with it, it's linux based so it has a much greater mouse support than DOS.

Right click on the D drive, or the partition in question. Select: Modify > Change Partition Type ID Double check to make sure you are selecting the right partition and then change it to type 0x07 Then near the bottom left click 'apply'. Cross your fingers and boot back into windows and see if you can access the second partition.
